February 2008

  • A Letter Received 29th February 2008 from Afghanistan

Thank you very much for your kind gift, it really means a lot to the boys and I knowing that we have the support of good people back home such as yourselves. Life here is OK and not always as bad as the press makes it out to be. The weather has got a lot better which helps. At one point it went down to - 26c which is not much fun. Well I best go as it's getting too dark to write.

Many thanks for your kind gift,
    Matt. XXX

  • A Letter Received 23rd February 2008 from Iraq

I would just like to say thank you very much for the parcel you sent. It was such a nice surprise. It is really nice that people are thinking of us out here. We do sometimes feel forgotten, but we have a job to do and that's what we do.

I think it's hard for the younger lads out here, I have been doing the job for a long time and you could say I am used to being away. The young people out here are working really, really hard with very little time to relax or re-charge their batteries. It makes me proud to be working alongside them and although it's tough at times out here, I would not miss it for all the tea in China.

I have been in the Royal Navy for the past twenty years and this is the first time I have worked alongside the army. In fact it's the first job I have had shore side for many a year. Their humour is different than the Navy but we get along very well. Thanks once again and please pass on my thanks to everyone involved in www.thanktheforces.co.uk it is really appreciated. The smiles on everyone's face yesterday were a great sight.

The arrival of the parcels cheered us all up loads.

    Thanks very, very much.
    Regards and best wishes,
    Dickie

  • Received from Afghanistan 20th February 2008

Today I was handed a parcel you so kindly sent to Afghanistan. Many thanks for sending all the goodies. Everything will come in handy; the tea bags are already open.

I've been here since the end of November 2007 and I think the Padre has a lot of parcels sent to him to distribute. It's so nice to know so many people at home are thinking of us.

This is my first time away with the RAF. I joined 4 years ago now, so it was my first Christmas and New Year away from my friends and family. We all made the most everything, Christmas dinner was served by the officers, but we had no Christmas pudding and no alcohol. We played bingo and a quiz before counting down to 2008.

My parents have promised a second Christmas dinner when I return home at the end of March. We get a few days off to go home mid tour so I am looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up on some rest.

Thank you again for the parcel,
    Take Care,
    Rachel

Just a reply to say thank you very much for your generosity and kindness it was appreciated by all of us here. It is nice to know that people back home are thinking of us and gave everyone a bit of morale and some lovely tucker!

I don't know what it's like back home but the weather here has improved dramatically over the last few weeks, the sun is shining and the combat jackets are back on the peg. We didn't really have a wet season, which we expected so that was a bonus.

I'm a Sussex boy myself, so it was even nicer to get these gifts from people from people so close to home. The card you sent reminds me of home, really miss the greenery as all we see here is sand, sandy coloured clothes, sand coloured vehicles and buildings so looking forward to a bit of greenery when I get home. What you appreciate out here are the simple things in life, things that I took for granted back home.

I have been here since 31 Oct 07 so a few months to go yet. Quite enjoy it, really eye opening actually being out here and establishing what's really going on away from all the stuff you see on the TV and the newspapers.

Its 8.00pm here on a Saturday so I'm going to watch a DVD. No alcohol out here so a pretty quiet life in the evenings. I've lost a lot of weight because of this though.

    Just to say Thanks again,
Take care and all the best,
    Russell LCPL
